The Nigerian Scrabble Federation (NSF) is organizing a training camp for young scrabble players in Lagos ahead of the Mattel World Youth Scrabble Championship in Torquay, UK.
A statement by Akintunde Akinsemola, Chairman, NSF Publicity Committee said the two weeks camp would open in Magodo, Lagos from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 for some leading young scrabble players in Nigeria.
According to him, the camping is to prepare the country’s youth team for the forthcoming Mattel World Youth Scrabble Championship in Torquay, UK, slated to hold from Oct. 22 to Oct. 29.
The statement quoted the National Scrabble Coach, Anthony Ikolo saying that he expect to use the rendezvous to grill the newbies for a tough battle with their counterparts across the globe.
“Nigeria’s best position at the World Youth Championship is fourth position but I hope the camping will lead to an improved outing in UK.
“NSF is seizing the opportunity of the summer holiday to organise this camp for the youngsters.
“Hopefully, with serious training, Nigeria will improve upon Femi Akinlosotu’s fourth position, at the 2010 World Youth Championship, in Manilla,’’ he said.
Akinsemola said that the former World Scrabble Champion, Wellington Jighere and other notable top Scrabble players are expected to add the needed boost to encourage the kids during the camping.
